Life of Clara Bush Mims (Andrews)

(1887– 1969)

Clara Bush Mims was born on January 26, 1887 in Alabama.  Her father was Jeff Cone Mims (1862-1897) and her mother was Ledonia Carrie Lewis (1864-1912).

She married James King Andrews (1890-1951) on May 12, 1913 in Wilcox County, Alabama. They had 3 children, Edgar (1914-2008), Irma (1918-2005), and Doris (1921-2005).


James owned the drug store in McWilliams and did farming. Clara, was an elementary school teacher.  In 1921 the family moved to Monroeville, Alabama, and in 1922 they moved to Chattanooga, Tennessee, and in 1925 they moved to Tampa, Florida.  Irma and Doris stayed with relatives in Alabama during the summer while their parents got settled in Tampa.  They lived in the Seminole Heights area of Tampa for about a year before moving to the Bay area of Tampa where they rented several homes before purchasing one on Hawthorne Road in about 1927.  The family lived in this home until Edgar passed away in 2008.

James developed diabetes and passed away on January 8, 1951. Clara passed away on July 15, 1969.
